Mendel festival

We invite you to the Mendel Festival—a multi-genre week of science, music, and entertainment that celebrates the legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel, the discoverer of the fundamental principles of heredity. The festival combines cutting-edge science presented in an accessible way, a family-friendly atmosphere, and musical experiences for all generations. Admission is free.

The Faculty of Science will offer guided tours of the RECETOX Institute (registration required) and interactive activities on the theme of “the cell,” organized by the Bioskop Science Education Center.

CEPLANT International Summer School on Plasma-Surface Engineering

The summer school programme introduces the fundamentals of low-temperature plasmas, the development of cold plasma sources, plasma–surface interactions, and modern diagnostic and characterisation techniques. It also presents cutting-edge applications of plasma technologies in nanomaterials, energy systems, environmental remediation, agriculture, and biomedicine. The programme includes approximately 15 lectures, a guided tour of CEPLANT laboratories, and an opportunity to discuss research in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

We will continue to the Mojetín Karst, where we’ll find the highlight of the excursion – Biscutella laevigata.

Botanical excursion: In search of sedges in the Záhlinice meadows

8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Excursion Leaders: Radomír Řepka & Jan Řepka
Meet at 8:30 a.m. on the southern edge of the village of Záhlinice (Kroměříž District), at the T-intersection of the paved roads (49°17’16”N, 17°28’59”E). Route: From north to south, zigzagging through various parts of the Záhlinice Meadows complex. The main focus will be on wetland sedges, particularly hybrid plants of the Phacocystis section, with on-site analysis of morphological characteristics.

Botanical seminar: Impacts of observation error on estimates of vegetation dynamics and biodiversity change

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

This presentation examines how observation error affects estimates of vegetation dynamics and biodiversity change using repeated survey data from grassland ecosystems across Central Europe. By integrating multi-site datasets with modeling approaches such as particle-based filtering, it quantifies observation uncertainty and improves estimates of key ecological processes, including species persistence and extinction dynamics. The results highlight the importance of accounting for observation error to obtain more reliable assessments of community change and ecosystem resilience.

Botanical seminar: František Zedek: Stability, change, and genetic variability in plants: evolutionary context

4:00 PM

How do plants maintain stability while constantly changing? This lecture will show how genetic variability arises through recombination and how it can be surprisingly well estimated from chromosome size—even in species we know almost nothing about. Based on the latest research, it will offer a new perspective on plant evolution and their ability to adapt to a changing world.

Botanical seminar: Epigenetic memory in plants

4:00 PM

Epigenetic memory allows plants to “remember” past periods of stress or environmental conditions and adjust their functioning accordingly in the future. In this lecture, we will explore how these experiences are encoded in gene regulation without altering DNA, and how they enable plants to respond more quickly, more precisely, and with surprising sophistication. We will share examples from our research, and I hope to convince you that memory is crucial for plant survival in a changing world.

Botanical seminar: Between meadows and floodplains: the flora of the Soutok Protected Landscape Area through the ages

The Soutok Protected Landscape Area harbours a high diversity of flora and vegetation. Its wetlands consist of pools, oxbows, and alluvial deposits that host many rare plant species, which are reliant on specific local conditions. Floodplain forests are the prevailing habitat of Soutok, yet they are threatened by insufficient flooding and by fungal pathogens. Their understorey features a rich spring aspect.

Everyone from the Faculty of Science is invited to participate - students, researchers, and administrative staff. The event offers an opportunity to learn about the research carried out by women at the faculty, and at the same time draws attention to the important work of administrative and operational staff, which often takes place in the background, but is indispensable for the functioning of the faculty.

7th Hands-On Computational Enzyme Design Course

9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Do you need to engineer your protein of interest? Do you wish to employ user-friendly one-stop-shop software tools for the design of mutations and libraries, but do not want to spend time on tedious installations or use the Unix command-line? This interactive course will provide essential theory on different areas of enzyme engineering and hands-on experience with several software tools suitable for mining new enzymes, and engineering the activity, specificity, enantioselectivity, stability, and solubility of enzymes. To remain at the cutting edge of scientific advancements, we will also explore the applications of machine learning techniques and quantum computing in enzyme design.

Expedition to Worlds Deepest Known Vent Sites in the Cayman Trough and Ore Formation in the Zambia Copperbelt

The lectures Expedition to Worlds Deepest Known Vent Sites in the Cayman Trough and Ore Formation in the Zambia Copperbelt will be focused on research of smokers on the bottom of the sea and genesis of copper deposits in Africa.

Botanical seminar: Interactions between hemiparasites and invasive plants of grassland habitats (PhD defence)

Euphytoid hemiparasites are capable of suppressing a wide range of invasive plants and function as an effective tool for biotic resistance. Experimental results from cultivation and field research confirm a significant weakening of invasive species and a simultaneous increase in the species diversity of communities. Hemiparasites plants thus represent a promising and sustainable means of controlling invasions and supporting ecosystem restoration.

Zoological seminar: Special seminar on the declaration of the Soutok Protected Landscape Area

The confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers is one of the most valuable natural areas not only in the Czech Republic but also in Europe. Water plays a key role here, with a network of river branches, wetlands, pools, floodplain meadows, and riparian forests. This area of exceptional biodiversity is home of 900 species of vascular plants and hundreds of species of rare animals. Come and hear how we plan to care for the landscape of the Moravian Amazon.

Mendel days 2025

The main theme of this year’s Mendel Days will be a lecture series titled Four Elements: Burning for Knowledge. The element of fire will be explored from the perspectives of geology, physics, botany, and visual arts, with lectures focusing on the significance and benefits of fire for the planet and humanity, for ecosystem protection, for the fascinating world of volcanoes, and for research in plasma nanotechnologies, and its role in modern Czech visual art.

Botanical seminar: Diversity of vascular plants of Slovak cities

Through field surveys, we compared the occurrence of vascular plants in different types of urban habitats - from city centres and railways to cemeteries and floodplains. In total, over 1000 plant species were recorded, of which one third were invasive species and 7% were Red-listed species. The results help to effectively monitor the status of urban vegetation and show that even ordinary urban habitats can harbour a surprisingly diverse flora. Can you guess which parts of the city boast the greatest biodiversity?

Battle of the Sexes: From Global Sexual Dimorphism to Local Thistles (Cirsium)

In plants, sex can be more important than it seems – sometimes it even influences where the species grow. In nature, there are plants which have both male and female individuals, but also those which combine both sexes in one flower. These different "sexual systems" differ not only in appearance but also in their distribution around the world. Using the example of thistles (genus Cirsium), we are investigating why female plants sometimes thrive better than hermaphroditic ones – and how they manage to live together in one place for a long time.

Sales exhibition of citrus fruits and other subtropical and tropical useful plants

A sales exhibition of citrus fruits and other subtropical and tropical useful plants will take place from Wednesday, October 15, to Sunday, October 19, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the botanical garden greenhouses. Experienced growers will be present at the exhibition to offer advice on plant care. This year's sub-theme of the exhibition will be Mediterranean Plants. As part of the citrus exhibition, there will also be an exhibition of growing mushrooms. It will be organized and described by Petr Hrouda, Ph.D., a mycologist from the Institute of Botany and Zoology at our faculty. The basic admission fee for the exhibition is CZK 160, reduced admission is CZK 80.

3D Screening: Villains or Heroes in Microverse 3D

The Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University, the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology with the CEPLANT Centre invites you to the 3D screening "Villains or Heroes of Microverse 3D". The narrated projection will be screened every hour on the hour between 9AM to 5PM at the entrance to the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden. To enter the greenhouses, a standard entrance ticket is required. The entrance from Veveří Street will be open for the duration of the event. The event is sponsored by TESCAN GROUP, a.s. Registration is not necessary. Suitable for the general public and families with children.

Electron microscope laboratory and plasma physics labs

The lab tour will reveal all kinds of bad guys and heroes. In CEPLANT and DPPT labs, plasma governs them all. With plasma, we can cover drill bits with "indestructible" film, force a drop of water to spill or escape from a surface, and change materials at their basic level within just a moment. You will see the results of our scientists' work not only with your own eyes but also with the detectors of an electron microscope. The capacity is limited, registration is necessary.

V4SDB Developmental Biology Student Summer School

The course will consist of multiple hands on experimental practicals and lectures covering a variety of models of developmental biology such as Xenopus, Danio and Gallus and state-of-the art methods of their imaging and analysis. Our target audience are graduate students (both at MSc and PhD level). 18th Czech – Slovak Spectroscopy Conference (18 CSSK) and the Mössbauer Spectroscopy in Materials Science (MSMS) conference

The joint scientific conferences are held under the auspices of the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, prof. Tomáš Kašparovský and the Czech Commission for UNESCO.

Part of the 18th CSSK is the microsymposium Recent progress in Vibrational Spectroscopy – 50 Years of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. The microsymposium is connected with the 65th anniversary of the death of the prominent physicist Adolf Smekal, who theoretically predicted the Raman effect.

The program also includes awarding important scientific personalities. The Medals bear the names of famous historical scientific personalities: Ioannes Marcus Marci of Kronland and Nicolaus Konkoly-Thege.

A Hundred Times Antarctica

SITE REMEDIATION AND TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES

The course is designed to assist a diverse audience with decisions pertaining to a variety of detailed technical, regulatory, and economic issues associated with site cleanup efforts. It will benefit both technical personnel and decision makers from a variety of agencies and organizations that are typically involved in the remedial process, such as consulting, regulatory, insurance, financial, and state entities. Special focus is directed on new technologies and innovative concepts such as multiphase extraction and injectant delivery methods, including the economic impact of site cleanup efforts.

Ijã Mytyli Collective: Collaborative films in indigenous terms.

Seminar will be held by a Brasilian visit of an indigenous filmmaker, Typju Myky, and a PhD student of Social Anthropology, André Luís Lopes Neves, from the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil).

The topic of the lecture is about creating collective films with indigenous people from the Amazon forest gathered in an open association called Ijã Mytyli Collective. The debate will be moderated by Paride Bollettin, the Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology.

Admission is free.

Exhibition on the ancient landscapes of Moravi

During the month of March, the Central Library of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University is hosting an exhibition on the ancient landscapes of Moravia. The exhibition was created by geographers from the Institute of Geonics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, based on several years of research on the historical landscapes of Moravia. There are examples of landscapes of Brno and Drahansko region on display. Come and discover sites whose structure has been virtually unaffected by social development for two centuries!

The MU Language Center has organized an English writing course specifically aimed at doctoral students of all fields. This course introduces the essentials of academic writing that can be effectively adopted in writing project and grant proposals. The course consists of a group online session for all participants, an individual one to one online session with the instructor and personalized feedback on a writing task of your choice.
