Supercells and Tornadoes & Storm Photography

The lecture will focus on convective storm, which bring with them dangerous weather events.

• At the beginning of the lecture, the basic conditions that are necessary for the formation of these storms will be discussed. The distribution of convective storms will also be given very briefly.
• Subsequently, we will focus on one specific type, namely a supercell storm. This storm is exceptional for its long life of up to several hours. Its characteristics include one powerful updraft, which usually rotates around its vertical axis. The very strong and organized flow in the supercell is the cause of specific weather events, which can include torrential rain, strong gusts of wind, hail and, in some cases, tornadoes.
• The next part of the lecture will focus on tornadoes, where its basic characteristics and conditions for its occurrence will be discussed. In connection with this phenomenon, the situation from 24 June 2021 will be mentioned, when a dangerous tornado of the F4 force occurred in southern Moravia in connection with the supercell storm. Another example of a tornado will be the relatively recent situation on February 18, 2022 in Poland, where over ten tornadoes occurred in a single day.
• The end of the lecture will focus on taking photos of thunderstorms, where it will be announced, for example, what a suitable camera is or from which places to take photos of thunderstorms and lightning.
