Ournew war and language of confusion: discussion on situation in Northern Syria
-
14 November 2019
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Turkey attacked Syria on 9th October 2019, thus beginning a new war in the Middle East. The war is justified in terms of the war on terror and establishing a „safe zone“, while, at the same time, soldiers and civilians are dying in Rojava –the Syrian/Kurdish territory where the war is being fought. Now, who is a terrorist and who is a peacemaker? Have the words still the power to explain what is going on? Who has the power to define the meaning of the words? The moderators of the discussion will bring forward the reasoning of the leader of the attacking party, president Erdogan. Then the moderators will ask audience to justify or infirm his arguments, or ask questions which can help to understand the current development in a broader perspective. Thus the historical context of the social and political development in Rojava will become a part of the discussion as well. The discussion is presented by Petr Daněk and Pavel Doboš from the Department of Geography, Science Faculty, Masaryk University. It will be held in Czech without translation
