To study and play top-level sport you need careful preparation and perseverance

Reconciling studies at Masaryk University’s (MU) Faculty of Science with top-level training requires good planning and continuous preparation. Anežka Hlaváčová is in her second year of studying Experimental and Molecular Biology and represents the Czech Republic in ski orienteering, also known as Ski-O. She won a bronze in the Junior World Championships in Estonia, and at the beginning of February she won two silvers and a bronze in the World Cup under 23 women’s category in Austria. She finished 11th overall in the World Championships, and 4th in the U23 World Championships.

I learn to see the world in context

Although many people imagined Aneta Vrzalová as a medical student, she preferred to study Environment and Health at the MU Faculty of Science. In her undergraduate studies, she has already been actively involved in the FireExpo research project - investigating how the firefighter profession negatively affects their physical health. She enjoys being part of the "real" science that impacts people's lives.

Brno scientists have a revolutionary discovery on their hands. They want to sustainably light up using sea glowworms

Imagine turning on a light one day without needing electricity and without the side effect of releasing heat. Scientists at the Loschmidt Laboratories at MU Faculty of Science are a little closer to this revolutionary innovation. They have described and explained the mechanism of the glowing of the sea urchin Renilla violet. Moreover, the mechanism can also be imitated artificially. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Moffitt Cancer Center, NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center based in Tampa, Florida, Stanislav Drápela is investigating the processes by which cancer cells “fall asleep” and “reawaken”. In this interview, he explains how the focus of his early studies – the ability to design research programmes – has helped him early in his career as a scientist.

MUNI Mendel Doctorandus welcomes the new semester with new students and a brand-new logo

The MUNI Mendel Doctorandus programme for talented PhD students opened another admission procedure in January 2023. A total of 14 students across the faculties of the Bohunice Campus and CEITEC applied, and members of the MMD Committee reviewed their applications. After the evaluation, all applied students were admitted to the programme.

Barrande Fellowship Programme

The French Institute in Prague and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports support international educational exchange programmes and scientific cooperation between French and Czech scientific teams. They provide a scholarship for PhD students in the Cotutelle programme as well as a scholarship for short-term research stays.

From the Library Director: “We try to make students feel like they are in their own living room here”.

For more than thirteen years, Taťána Škarková has been running the Faculty of Science’s Central Library on Kotlářské Street. Before that, she also worked for thirteen years at the Municipal Library in Moravsky Krumlov, where she originally comes from. After thirteen years she is definitely not thinking of another change, despite commuting over two hours a day to work. Working in the library still keeps her fulfilled and amused, and she happy to have a great team of colleagues to work with.
