European Research Council (ERC) grants support excellent researchers with the aim of advancing so-called frontier research, i.e. typically interdisciplinary research that goes beyond the current state of knowledge in a given field towards breakthrough discoveries or significant advances in understanding and the opening of new research perspectives. At the same time, ERC projects aim to foster the emergence and growth of a new generation of research leaders in Europe, along with the natural identification of topics that have a significant impact on society, the economy, or policy-making.

ERC grants are perceived by the scientific community (and beyond) as highly prestigious and represent a benchmark of research quality in individual countries, as well as an indicator of the standing of research institutions in international competition.

The ERC Starting Grant is intended for researchers who are at an early stage of their independent careers and wish to focus on building their own research teams. The significance of the ERC Starting Grant lies in its support for creative, innovative, high-risk/high-gain research with the potential to deliver breakthrough insights in a given field, while helping early-career researchers develop their research careers at the international level.

ABOUT ERC STARTING
CALL CONDITIONS
  • The candidate is a junior researcher who obtained a PhD 2–10 years prior to the submission of the application, with the aim of establishing their own research team (team members may also come from non-member countries).
  • Standard eligibility extensions are possible—for example, due to maternity/paternity leave, periods of long-term illness, or periods when the candidate was not working in the research field.
  • The proposal is individual, with a single principal investigator.
  • The proposal can be submitted in any research field.
  • The principal investigator’s commitment must be at least 0.5 FTE, and at least 50% of the project time must be carried out in an EU Member State or an associated country.
PROJECT DURATION
  • 5 years
FUNDING
  • In the case of success, the principal investigator can receive a grant of up to €1.5 million.
  • An additional top-up of up to €1 million is also possible to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers relocating from a third country to an EU or associated country, for the acquisition of major equipment, access to large facilities, or other significant costs related to experimental and fieldwork.
  • Any acquisition of equipment is subject to depreciation rules (consult with OPP).

The ERC Advanced Grant is intended for experienced researchers who are already well established in their field and have achieved internationally recognised results. The ERC Advanced Grant aims to provide support for further scientific research through ambitious projects that continue to push the boundaries of knowledge in the given area and lead to significant and groundbreaking discoveries.

ABOUT ERC ADVANCED
CALL CONDITIONS
  • The candidate is an internationally recognized researcher with significant impact in their field and more than 12 years of scientific experience since obtaining their PhD prior to the submission of the application.
  • Standard eligibility extensions are possible—for example, due to maternity/paternity leave, periods of long-term illness, or periods when the candidate was not working in the research field.
  • The proposal is individual, with a single principal investigator.
  • The proposal can be submitted in any research field.
  • The principal investigator’s commitment must be at least 0.3 FTE, and at least 50% of the project time must be carried out in an EU Member State or an associated country.
PROJECT DURATION
  • 5 years
FUNDING
  • In the case of success, the principal investigator can receive a grant of up to €2.5 million.

The ERC Consolidator Grant focuses on supporting the careers of excellent young researchers at a stage when they already have a strong scientific track record but require additional resources to further develop their research and expand their own independent research team or programme. The aim of the ERC Consolidator Grant is therefore to help researchers achieve scientific independence and carry out innovative research with substantial impact, thereby strengthening their position on the international scientific stage.

ABOUT ERC CONSOLIDATOR
CALL CONDITIONS
  • The candidate is an established researcher in their field with 5–15 years of scientific experience since obtaining their PhD prior to the submission of the application, with the aim of consolidating their research team.
  • Standard eligibility extensions are possible—for example, due to maternity/paternity leave, periods of long-term illness, or periods when the candidate was not working in the research field.
  • The proposal is individual, with a single principal investigator.
  • The proposal can be submitted in any research field.
  • The principal investigator’s commitment must be at least 0.4 FTE, and at least 50% of the project time must be carried out in an EU Member State or an associated country.
PROJECT DURATION
  • 5 years
FUNDING
  • In the case of success, the principal investigator can receive a grant of up to €2 million.
  • An additional top-up of up to €1 million is also possible to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers relocating from a third country to an EU or associated country, for the acquisition of major equipment, access to large facilities, or other significant costs related to experimental and fieldwork.

The ERC Synergy Grant is aimed at supporting bold and highly innovative projects with the potential to deliver major advances in a given scientific field, which can only be achieved through strong interdisciplinary team collaboration. A key aspect of the ERC Synergy Grant is the integration of scientific disciplines, unique expertise, and infrastructures, and conducting research using new, unconventional methods and approaches.

ABOUT ERC SYNERGY
CALL CONDITIONS
  • The ERC Synergy Grant is distinctive in that the candidate is not a single principal investigator, but a group of 2–4 investigators with different specializations. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity, as the research problem is so ambitious that it cannot be addressed by a single researcher alone.
  • There is no specific time requirement since obtaining a PhD; however, the participating researchers must demonstrate competitive achievements in their respective fields.
  • The proposal can be submitted in any research area.
  • Each investigator’s commitment must be at least 0.3 FTE, and at least 50% of the project time must be carried out in an EU Member State or an associated country.
PROJECT DURATION
  • 6 years
FUNDING
  • In the case of success, the investigators can receive a grant of up to €10 million.
  • An additional top-up of up to €4 million is also possible to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers relocating from a third country to an EU or associated country, for the acquisition of major equipment, access to large facilities, or other significant costs related to experimental and fieldwork.
  • Any acquisition of equipment is subject to depreciation rules (consult with OPP).

The ERC Proof of Concept Grant aims to support successful recipients of previous ERC Grants who have promising basic research results and to explore the potential for translating these findings into practical applications, i.e., transforming scientific concepts into practical products, technologies, or services. Last but not least, the ERC Proof of Concept Grant seeks to assess whether the research results have potential for commercialization or further societal use.

ABOUT ERC PROOF OF CONCEPT
CALL CONDITIONS
  • The ERC Proof of Concept Grant is intended only for researchers who have previously been recipients of an ERC Grant (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced, or Synergy).
  • Its aim is to support further exploration of ideas and results from previous ERC research, particularly in areas such as testing and validating hypotheses, identifying weaknesses and risks, assessing technical feasibility, clarifying intellectual property and knowledge transfer strategies, engaging industrial partners, societal organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders, and evaluating the potential benefits for end-users of the expected innovation.
  • The proposal can be submitted in any research area.
  • There is no specified minimum commitment for the principal investigator; however, it must be demonstrably sufficient to successfully advance the results of frontier research towards application or commercialization.
PROJECT DURATION
  • 18 months
FUNDING
  • In the case of success, the principal investigator can receive a grant of up to €150,000.
