This project focuses on exploring new pathways allowing the red or near-infrared (NIR)-light activation of chromophores that can directly be excited only by UV light. The interest is motivated by our recent findings of a unique process, termed proton-coupled triplet energy transfer (PCTEnT). Several fundamental questions will be resolved within this project, such as whether PCTEnT is a universal phenomenon or whether the process could also be found in common natural chemical/biological systems. In short, we will design new bichromophoric systems to study PCTEnT, search for analogous processes to understand the underlying mechanism, and suggest potential applications.
