The aim of this project is to evaluate the thermal stability of thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering. The studied films consist of transition metals, boron and carbon and have possible industrial applications as protective coatings for cutting tools due to their rare combination of favourable mechanical properties. However, high temperatures reached in these applications can negatively affect the coating properties. It is therefore imperative to analyse the thermal stability of the films.
