The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a key driver in the move towards data-intensive and open science, and a fleet of projects in recent funding calls have launched the EOSC ecosystem. EOSC Expand integrates, consolidates, and connects many of these disparate initiatives in order to deliver the crucial elements of EOSC as this emerges in the EOSC Governance: the EOSC-Core provides the glue of key capabilities to support the basic operation of EOSC (including a portal) and the EOSC-Exchange houses the wealth of researcher-facing services from the EOSC community (including thematic scientific clusters, regional projects, national and sectoral organisations, industry and other providers). EOSC will enable European researchers to do Open Science and the portal will provide an access mechanism for researchers to utilise the full spectrum of EOSC resources (including publications, data, software, and value-added services) for their research.
Through these key EOSC elements, the project will support the reduction of research fragmentation and disciplinary or national silos, as well as promote Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data, professionally provided services, and open research products. The project will build on the work and outputs of EOSC-Hub, EOSC-Enhance, OpenAIRE-Advance, and other EU-funded projects and initiatives. This includes projects awarded under the EINFRA-12-201715, INFRAEOSC-05-2018, and INFRAEOSC-04-2018 calls as well as the new INFRAEOSC-07-2020 projects. The project will strengthen, simplify, and increase access to different types of EOSC resources by effectively providing the mechanisms to implement a data and service interoperability framework (utilising standard and concrete APIs and AAI) through an ecosystem of regional and thematic portals all connected to the EOSC Portal. It will therefore support better cooperation and synergies with other European research initiatives such as High Performance Computing (HPC), European Data Spaces, and the Long Tail of Science. Finally, we will closely monitor and support policy priorities of EU Member States and Associated Countries (MS/AC), including agendas for Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, the Green Deal, and Europe in the World.
