Printed photovoltaics could contribute greatly to increasing global access to cheap energy. Mesoporous TiO2 coating have emerged as a promising low-cost photovoltaic technology and constitute a notable application field for semiconducting photoanodes. The application portfolio for mesoporous TiO2 includes also photocatalytic treatment of water, hydrogen production, energy storage and various sensing systems. However, Innovative materials essential for technological progress in industry and everyday life are often associated with some drawback(s). TiO2 with photocatalytical attributes has to be cured at high temperatures (400 °C) which preclude the use of such fabrication procedures on thermally sensitive substrates such as flexible plastics – which are a key element for emerging industrial field of flexible and printed electronics. Masaryk University in collaboration with Brno Technological University reported on low-temperature electrical plasma process that can replace high temperature curing steps and allow to easily print electronics devices on plastic foils and manufacture them using roll to roll fashion. A revolutionary, patent-protected method, will be further studied at pilot roll-to-roll line for fabrication of photonic devices at large-scale and low-cost conditions.
