Plant genetics has a long tradition in Brno, beginning with its founding here by Gregor Mendel. Plant developmental and evolutionary genetics in Brno is now developed especially in two organizations, the Institute of Biophysics AS and the Department ofG enetics and Molecular Biology, Masaryk University. The PhD program in genetics is accredited for both institutions and the main investigators háve been successful supervisors of 16 PhD theses. Their research activities are focused on the study ofmolecula r mechanisms of developmental and evolutionary processes in plants with a theoretical and potentially applicable impact into biology of reproduction. Model organisms include Arabidopsis (chromatin structure and embryogenesis), Silene (structureand evolut ion of sex chromosomes), Nicotiana (polyploidy, transgenosis, and epigenetic silencing) and crops, Carica and Medicago. The aim of this project is to integrate efforts of both institutions in order to increase the quality of the PhD study
