Self-assembled layers (SAM) of nucleic acid bases, nucleosides, nucleotides, alkylthiols, quarternary ammonium salts and phospholipids adsorbed at the surfaces of mercury, graphite, silicon and other conductive and semiconductive surfaces will be studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, diffractive optical element (DOE) sensor, X-ray reflection and AFM microscopy. Recently the DOE sensor was applied in surface structural characterisation of the carbon electrodes (glassy carbon, pyrolytic graphite) modified by mercury layers. The interactions between adsorbed bases can result in their two-dimensional (2-D) condensation and formation of a compact layer. The effect of structural morphology of the chemical modified surfaces on the formation and properties of the SAM layers of the nucleic acid and phospholipids will be studied. The results will contribute to the development of DNA biosensor.
