Siemens has announced the 29th edition of the Werner von Siemens Prize, which is open to students, young researchers and academic staff in technical and natural science disciplines at Czech universities. This year, the winners across seven categories will share a total cash prize of one million crowns.
Applications can be submitted via the portal www.cenasiemens.cz until 30 November 2026. As is traditional, the general public is invited to participate in the nominations.
“Modern science needs not only exceptional ideas, but also the opportunity to showcase them. The long-term aim of our competition is to discover talented students and scientists, to give visibility to their bold projects, and at the same time to pay tribute to the teachers who guide them on this journey and serve as their inspiration,” said Eduard Palíšek, CEO of the Siemens Group in the Czech Republic, at the launch of the competition.
The 29th edition will award one million crowns across seven categories. In the categories for the best undergraduate thesis and the best postgraduate thesis, supervisors will also receive an award and a financial prize alongside the students. The total amount of financial prizes that Siemens has distributed among 512 winners over the past 28 years as part of the competition has reached 18.5 million crowns.
Award categories and jury chairpersons:
In the previous edition of the competition, Charles University won the most awards (8), followed by the Czech Academy of Sciences (4), the Czech Technical University in Prague and the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava (3 each), Masaryk University (2 awards) and the Brno University of Technology and the University of Pardubice (1 award each). The general public can also get involved in the nominations this year. Candidates and their work can be nominated via the website www.cenasiemens.cz. Should the nominated candidate win, the nominator will receive a prize of 10,000 CZK.
About the competition:
The Werner von Siemens Award is organised by Siemens Czech Republic in collaboration with leading representatives of universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences, who also act as guarantors for the individual categories and participate in the evaluation of the entries. The awards ceremony is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In terms of its scope, the size of the financial rewards and its history, the Werner von Siemens Award is one of the most significant independent initiatives of its kind in the Czech Republic.
