The human fetus is exposed to environmental chemicals during the prenatal period through its mother. The impact of such exposure, specifically the impact of exposure to complex chemical exposures, is not fully known. The project aims to better understand how individual chemicals and their mixtures, as one of the environmental factors, contribute to immune-mediated diseases in childhood by employing innovative approaches. Our scientific premise is that prenatal chemical exposure deregulates immunity development, and such deregulation can be detected in newborns by analysis of the cord blood. These prenatal exposure-induced changes negatively impact child immunity later in life and can contribute to the development and/or progression of immune-mediated diseases during childhood.
